They say film is like life, and life is like film. How true that sentence is, but is this because life imitates art, or is it because in some way you can link your life to anything if you look hard enough. I believe it is the first, pure coincidence which makes you take a step back and go “wow” that is so like me. Even if it is coincidence, and that you are sub-consciously looking for those connections, who cares. It makes you feel good and it builds a relationship between you and that film which upon watching it activates those good memories and feelings, so as far as I am concerned, whatever the reason, it is all good!
Now, what made me think about this, two things to be honest – one being a gay film I watched about film reviews and the other being my life and a series of quite spectacular coincidences. Now I’ve got your attention haven’t I!
In 2006 I shared a special moment with someone; to be exact it was on 25 July 2006. It was brief and special but so much more than a holiday fling, and it ended shortly after due to certain circumstances which I won’t go into! We remained friends and drifted in and out of each others lives through friends and common interests, but nothing more happened, despite the obvious chemistry. Two years later on 11 June 2008 I went to a bar in Soho for a party. At this party drinks flowed and the chemistry was undeniable. We flirted and bought each other drinks and accompanied each other to the station at the end of the evening. The tension was undeniable and when it came to having to leave the train, the urge to kiss her was strong, although I didn’t act on this.
On Friday 13 June I went around her house to watch some DVDs. We started to watch The Lake House but were highly distracted and turned it off part way through. That was the night we decided that we could no longer ignore our feelings.
A few weeks later and we headed off to Barcelona for a tournament and I was staying in a hotel. On the 25 July 2008 we made our relationship official and celebrated with a champagne breakfast in my hotel room, it was a magical day.
Back in London, life was carrying on, each month we celebrated our special day and we enjoyed life and all that it offered.
On Friday 13 February we sat down for a special pre-valentines evening and started to watch The Lake House again. This time we managed to watch the entire film and it was truly magical. For those of you who haven’t seen the film it is about two people who live in the same place but two years apart and somehow their letters in the mail box cross time and they start to communicate. It is only two years later when they are both in the time when they know about each other that they can meet up. The film is centred around Valentines Day.
It is uncanny how much this film resembles our relationship. Love that cannot be fulfilled, having to wait two years before being together, the significance of a special place and a special date. Fate bringing them together.
Then came time for the start of season party, and where else should the organisers plan to have it than the same Soho bar we’d be to in June 2008, and what date, of course Friday 13 March.. Seeing this as a very special coincidence, we leapt at the chance to attend.
So, we have a very special anniversary date (25 July) which allows us to have a -2 anniversary as well as annual anniversaries, a special location (the bar in Soho), a special date (Friday 13th) and a special film which we relate to in such deep and meaningful ways (The Lake House).
The sceptic in you may say this is me just picking up on things in life that are coincidental and building on this, but I firmly believe in fate and that we weren’t supposed to be together two years ago, but now.
I have found my true love, my soul mate and my best friend, and I am lucky that they are all the same person who I can share the rest of my life with.
